“She really is the dream collaborator.” Chris Horan breaks down styling Charli XCX’s Rock Music video.
With the overwhelming sense of what this summer is about to become crystallised in a true zeitgeisty album the first person we turn to is Charli XCX.
After dominating the past two summers with Brat, Charli returns once again to save summer, with her new single ‘Rock Music’ alongside a music video packed with looks that could only come courtesy of Charli’s longtime stylist Chris Horan.
We caught up with Chris to get the full rundown on the video, the looks, and what it's like collaborating with Charli.

Perfect: What was the process of styling the ‘Rock Music’ music video like?
Chris Horan: “Charli [XCX] and I have been going back and forth for a few months on a visual language. When it came time to do the video it was easy to just run with the things we had been discussing. Back in early February we had a night where we had a lot of fun and played around with different bits we both had been gravitating towards. It was a lot of stuff I bought at cheaper vintage spots in London. That initial “fitting” helped iron out where we wanted to go. I would say that we’re building on top of Charli’s personal style instead of wiping everything and starting a ‘new look’”.

Perfect: Tell us about the looks.
Chris Horan: “There’s a ton of really fab custom looks from brands we love. Ann Demeulemeester made an epic leather pants and jacket set that we paired with Charli’s Danielle Frankell wedding gown- we tacked it up on one side to create a nice drape. Charli had the thought of wearing the dress in the video again and it kind of evolved into making it a top- she’s crowd surfing in this look no less!”

Chris Horan: “There’s another incredible custom leather pants and jacket set by Chrome Hearts. A custom 7 For All Mankind silk dress with opaque tights and platform pumps. A shrunken Ann d velvet blazer paired with some custom school boy shorts they made her.”
“Natasha Zinko denim set with pink vintage Gucci pumps”
“I had Jane Jones jewelry make a custom leather choker with 2 carat diamonds lining the whole thing. It’s pretty sick. We paired that with a cute Fallen Angels skirt, vintage bra and Abra white pumps with black bows”
“A metallic long sleeve Zadig & Voltaire bodycon dress”
“I also love the Mark Gong low rise leopard trouser and fur jacket look with the Agent P bra peaking out. Jimmy Choo made us a ton of sick custom pumps and boots that are studded and glossy - these will be staples for months to come for sure.”

Chris Horan: “My favourite look is probably the custom Zana Bayne leather/lace lingerie set with the matching neck brace. I think the shrunken blazer on top is the perfect pairing and the McQueen football leather shoes somehow matched perfectly.”

Perfect: What is the collaboration between yourself and Charli like?
Chris Horan: “I’ve said this so many times already but she really is the dream collaborator because she has a singular vision but still values and welcomes ideas. She asks questions and she is trusting in her collaborators. She really enjoys the process and I think it shows in her art.”
